Summary:
Phatik Chakravarti was fatherless village boy.He was rude in behaviour and careless in studies.He was the gang leader of the village. Makhanlal was his younger brother and he behaved well.
One day Phatik was trying to roll a sal log into the river with his friends.At that time his brother Makhanlal came there and sat on the log. Phatik asked the boys to roll the log with Makhanlal.At once Makhanlal jumped down and he gets hurt.Then he went home crying and complained Phatik to his mother.The mother scolded Phatik angrily.Phatik could not bear that.He beat Makhanlal severely and pushed the mother away.The mother was worried about his rude behaviour.Just then the mother's brother Bhisvambhar came there from Calcutta.He had 3 children and had grey hair and black moustache.The mother complained Phatik to her brother.Bishvambhar promised his sister to take Phatik to Calcutta and to educate him.When at the last day to leave came,he was moved to the joyous display of generosity.He bestowed on Makhanlal his fishing rod,kite and reel with permanant right of inheritance.Bhisvambhar had 3 children.So,Phatik was an additional burden and an unwelcomed guest to his aunt.At school Phatik remained stupid and inattentive.He was not able to mingle with classmates.He wanted to go this village.His uncle told him that no he could go home on Pooja holidays.One day Phatik lost his school books.His aunt scolded him for his carelessness.That night he had a fever and headache.He longed for his mother's love.Without telling his aunt he ran away from his uncle's house.His uncle informed the police about his missing.After a day two policemen brought him back.He was wet in rain and had a high fever.The doctor said that his condition was very serious.Bhisvambhar informed it to his mother.His mother came there crying.Phatik told his mother that his holidays had came and he was going home."East or West,Home is best".Phatik proved it.
