Summary:
In a little district of Washington Square,the streets are broken into small strips called"Places". So,to quaint old greenwich village the art people came prowling ,hunting and because of the low rents,
it becomes a "Colony"At the top of a squatty,three-storey brick house Sue and Johnsy had their studio.Johnsy was familiar for Joanna.One was from Maine and other from California.In november a cold,unseen stranger stalked into the colony whom the doctor called "Pneumonia".One morning doctor invited Sue into hallway with shaggy,grey eyebrow.He said Johnsy was suffering from Pneumonia and asked what was in her mind?She wanted to paint bay of naples someday said Sue.The chance for getting well is ten in one,he said.Sue went into Johnsy's room and painted a pair of elegant horseshow riding trousers and a monocle on the figure of the hero,an idaho cowboy for magazine story.She heard low voice several times repeating twelve,eleven,ten...counting backwards looking out of window.There is brick house twenty feet away and an old ivy vine tree climbing halfway up the wall with almost bare branches.Johnsy said there are almost five leaves.I want to see the last one falling.as soon as it fell I will also go by looking through the window.Sue asked her to close her eyes until she complete the work and decided to call old Behram.He was a painter,living beneath them,past sixty years of age,failure in art and wanted to draw a masterpiece but had not started yet.He pose as a model to the young artist.He drank gin to excess.Sue went into his room.He was smelling strongly of juniper berries in his dimly lighted den below.In one corner there is canvas waiting for the masterpiece for the past twenty five years.She told him about the situaion.They went upstairs and found Johsy was asleep.They lokked through the window.Next morning Johnsy saw a last one dark green leaf that hung bravely after the storm and rain the whole night.On seeing the last leaf Johnsy understand that the desire to die is a sin.She asked Sue to bring her little broth,some milk and little port in it.The doctor visited Johnsy and said she is completely fine.But the oldman under your house is suffering from pneumonia.Sue called Johnsy as White mouse and said Behrman died of Pneumonia.They found the wet shoes and cloths,ladder,brushes,palettes green and yellow colour mixed.So he painted the last leaf which has fallen from the tree last night.It was his masterpiece.
