The Refugee
Summary:
The refugees walked through the new capital alone and from a far away country.Their own lands are only few hundred miles apart. They entered the proud street of new capital,
their feet treading upon new concrete side-walk and although the street was full of things and even automobiles they had never heard about it. They tented in mats outside the city wall. They started to beg at the every shop. This made the shopkeepers irritation because they are coming to beg every hour. They started to pull rickshaws in getting low fares they could get.The cost is ten times less when compared to the amount given to the original rickshaw drivers. This made them to curse the refugees. The refugees were both men and women and they belong to same community. They wore garments out of same dark blue cotton stuffs, plain and cut in an old fashioned way.The sleeves were long and the coats were long and full. The men wore smocked aprons. The women had bands of same plain blue stuff wrapped like kerchiefs about their heads. Both men and women were strong and the women's feet were bound.Every father carries their children in baskets on their shoulders bit there were no young girls and no young infants. The burden had quilts made up of blue cotton stuff and padded.Clothing and bedding were cleanly made.On the top of every quilts with a bit of mate between, was an iron cauldron. These cauldrons were doubtlessly made from earthen ovens of the village. There was no trace of vestige of food, nor a trace of food having been cooked in them recently. The last one of this long progression of refugees was an old man with wrinkled face.He also carried an cauldron. It is weightless but it is too much for the old man to carry. His breath whistled.Suddenly he could go no more.So he dropped the cauldron gently.A noodles vendor set his stand near him and shouted his trade mark cry.A man passing stopped and looked at the old man.The man took one silver coin and a copper penny to the old man.Sir,I did not beg of you.We have good lands and because of flood the river rose up and destroyed our farms. We have no seeds left The young people were hungry and they ate it,said the old man.Take it,said the man and he out the coins in the apron of the old man.He too the coins and asked for the small bowl of noodles to the vendor. He opened his basket, there was a small boy lying with his eyes fast closed. This was old man's grandson. His father and mother were drowned into flood as they were working in the field. The vendor asked for the noodles with the silver coins'The old man refused it and he wants to but the seed to sow in his fields again.Even though I die the others will put the seed in the land.By sawing this he took the load and started walking.
