The Open Window
Summary:
Mrs.Sappleton was the aunt of Vera.Vera was s a lady of fifteen years of age .Framton Nuttel came there to visit Mrs.Sappleton for getting help to cure his nerves.
When he entered the house Mrs.Sappleton was not there.Her niece Vera received Mr.Nuttel and said her aunt will be down presently,she said. Nuttel's sister gave him a letter of introduction to all the people she know there. Nuttel gave the letter to Vera. She asked about his sister and the details related him.She came to know that he did not know anything about her aunt.He knew only her name and address.She planned a prank and started to tell a story that her tragedy happened just three years ago."You may wonder why we keep that window wide open on an October afternoon?"indicating the French window she asked.Out through this window,three years before her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day's shooting.They never came back.In crossing the moor to their favourite snipe-shooting ground they were engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog.Their bodies were never recovered."Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back someday with the little brown Spaniel that was lost with them.That's why she is keeping the window open.She also said me that her husband went with his white coat over his arm and Ronnie the youngest brother singing,'Bertie,Why do you bound?' to tease her aunt,said Vera.Her aunt bustled into the room with the whirl of apologies for coming late.She said,"My husbands and brothers will be home directly from shooting and they always come through window.They have been out for snipe in the marshes today,so they'll make fine mess over my carpets."She rattled about the the shooting and the scarcity of birds and the prospects for the ducks in the winter.To Nuttel it was purely horrible.He said doctor advised to take complete rest."Here they are at last",she cried.She went in to prepare tea for them.Nuttel saw three figures were walking across the lawn towards them;they all carried guns under their arms.One of them was carrying a white coat.A little sapniel kept close at their heels.Then a hoarse young voice chanted out of the dusk;"I said,Bertie,why do you bound?"He thought they were ghost and ran through the front gate.A cyclist came in that way had to run into hedge to avoid collision."I expect it was the sapniel"said Vera.He had told me he had a great horror of dogs.He was once hunted into a cemetery somewhere on the banks of the river Ganges by a pack of mongrel dogs and had to spend the whole night in a newly dug grave.Romance at short notice was her speciality.
